Brands stay ahead with the help of Social media competitions

Competitions running on the social media site Facebook are helping brands to stay ahead of their counterparts.

Many businesses are offering a chance for their Facebook followers to win prizes on their page and are using this opportunity to collect data. This data is then used to boost up customer engagement accordingly.

Andy Smith, senior brand manager for Bachelors at Premier Foods, said to the news portal that Facebook gives businesses more than a simple database of emails.

“The value of data can’t be underestimated. This data isn’t just email addresses, it is people who are engaging with your brand and who have opted in, rather than forgotten to un-tick a box,” he said.

While its hard work to launch a Facebook competition and communicate with fans the real challenge is to stay relevant. Now, these competitions have become a part of long term online marketing strategy.

The great way to understand Facebook followers and motivate them to interact with certain pages is to run competitions and give exclusive data, deals or information.

Alex Packham, head of social media at Odeon, says: “Competitions and the data they generate are becoming the foundation of making our guests’ marketing and cinema experience much more personal. Competitions give us the opportunity to get across commercial marketing messages with an added incentive for our guests to engage with the brand.”

“We’ve developed a comprehensive loyalty scheme database where giving member’s exclusive access to competitions is a key to acquisition and continued engagement with the Odeon brand,” he added.

To keep people engaged, brands are switching to weekly prizes. The continuous engagement drives the competition.

Peter Robb, brand and advertising manager at Continental Tyres, says “There were a total of 14 winning teams and they formed such a close relationship on the trip that when they got back they set up their own Facebook page and invited us to join. They’ve helped to promote the competition this year and recommended a lot more people to join in.”

Any brand looking to promote their ethical work can introduce a competition that gets the users to engage with the cause and promotes their message along with attracting a following.
